OSVALDO CAVANDOLI
IN MEMORIAM
On March 3rd, a sad news came from Milan - Osvaldo Cavandoli, author of world
famous animated serial LA LINEA died. He was born in 1920 at Maderno on Garda
lake but lives in Milan since when he was 2 years old. At age of 23 he began
to draw for animation. Between 1950 and 1958 he worked as producer and director
of movies with puppets. In 1969 he created the funny and simple character who
made him well known worldwide - LA LINEA the amusing Tv character, a masterpiece
of graphic and rhythmic essentiality, has been awarded in international festivals
and was shown in around 40 countries.
In the year 1984. Cavandoli was guest of Zagreb Festival of Animated Films and
also visited Cakovec, SAF studio and participants of the 1st International Animated
Film Workshop which was organized in primary school in village Dunjkovec.

FILMS AT INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALS
SAF films are continuously invited to many different festivals
around the world. Recently we received a pleasant news that film
ROSE, made by Toni Zadravec, is selected for International Festival
in Roma (Italy) inside a section "Alice in the city".
The festival will be held from October 18th to 27th.
Two films (ROSE, and WE'VE ALL FALLEN FROM MARS) are selected
for this year Mill Valley Festival in California ( October 4th
to 14th).
Film WATER is selected in competition program in AZYL section at
9.th International Film Festival in Bratislava (Slovakia), while
films WORLD IN A CRYSTAL BALL, KLAUSTROPHOBIA and ROSE were
selected in special program of films made by children.
Invitation also came from New York International Children Film Festival, for
which we submitted 11 films from recent production,
and
TOTI Festival in Maribor (Slovenia).
CROATIAN CHILDREN'S FILM FESTIVAL IN CAKOVEC
From September 27th to 30th, SAF and town of Cakovec will be hosts to more than
180 young filmmakers and their teachers from all Croatia.
Traditionally, children
from more than 80 cinema clubs once a year get together to present their annual
production. For this year festival, official jury has selected 83 films (out
of 135 submitted) in all genres (live action, documentary and animation). The
chosen films will be shown in seven Festival programs.
The Festival is organized by Croatian Film Club's Association
and with support of Croatian Ministry of science, education
and sports, town of Cakovec and Medjimurje county.
FILM WATER AWARDED IN
BANSKA BYSTRICA
Film WATER, realized by young author Toni Zadravec, received another significant recognition - it has been awarded at 12th International Contest of Children and Youth's Artistic Creativity GREEN WORLD, which was organized inside ENVIRO FILM Festival in Banska Bystrica (Slovakia).
Among twenty short animated films, Toni's film was awarded for the best work in the category of the children's animated cartoon.
The award giving ceremony was held on May, 15th in the cinema inside Museum of Slovakian National Uprising and was given by Slovak Environmental Agency in Banska Bystrica and Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic.
The contest also included drawings, paintings and photos on subject "Nature in the motives of the fairy tales".

NEW
FILMS
Children at SAF realized this year 6
new films. Two of them
(OUR WORLD OF ANIMATION and THE BEST
FRIEND), were maid by beginners (children who are first time
in SAF).
The rest of production was made by experienced children in age
between 9 and 14 years, who created four films in very different
topics and techniques.
Film DROPS is funny
short animation about three drops of milk which escape from
milk carton and start an adventure journey across kitchen
furniture until finish in cat's milk container.
GRANNY is a story about "young" granny who won a lottery prize
and takes trip around a world...
CLAUSTROPHOBIA is
simple animated film about chick who tries to get out from egg,
while in COLORFUL PLANET inhabitants suddenly
stay without a colours and take a trip to earth to "steal" a
rainbow...
This four new films will have a premiere screening at Croatian
Children's Film Festival, which will be held in Cakovec, from
27th to 30th of September.

OUR WORLD OF ANIMATION and
THE BEST FRIEND
ŠAF AT VIDEOTIVOLI FESTIVAL
This year VIDEOTIVOLI Festival was held from March 6th to 11th, as
a part of famous Tampere Film Festival. SAF participated at the
festival with four films from new production (FAIRY TALE, BALL,
ROSE and THE WORLD IN A CRYSTAL BALL), but this year Jasminka
BIjelic Ljubic, a representative of SAF took part in festival
screenings and happenings.
The SAF films were shown at Tullikamari Centre, together with short
films made by kids and young adults (realized in all genres), which
were chosen among 500 films sent to the festival. Many young filmmakers
and their teachers from different counties and Finland visited
screenings and enjoyed in films.
Besides screenings of films in competition, there were a lot of
other programs like retrospectives, exhibitions, seminars and concerts,
all together for at least 20 hours daily. The atmosphere were fantastic
and Finnish people very kind and pleasant (both people at streets,
who luckily speak English and are always ready to help, and festival
stuff).
SAF activities, as well as tradition of film and video making in
Croatia, caused rather big interest of foreign guests and festival
organizers. We hope that this will bring to further development
of cooperation between SAF and other studios and maybe already
this year some kids from Tampere will participate at International
Animated Film Workshop which will be organized in June In Cakovec.
